Do I need planning permission for an extension?
Most single-storey extensions qualify for permitted development rights and bypass planning, but some don't—loft conversions, multiple storeys, conservation areas, listed buildings. Building Regulations approval is always needed. Check with the local planning authority first.
What is Building Regulations approval?
Separate from planning permission, Building Regulations ensures work meets safety, structural, energy and access standards. Plans are submitted to the local authority's control team, who inspect at key stages. Required for extensions, lofts, renovations, new builds and structural changes.
How long does a loft conversion take?

What is the difference between solid and cavity walls?
